Who Needs Invisalign® Attachments?

Invisalign Santa Ana, CA

Invisalign® is a popular teeth-straightening treatment that has evolved since being released in 1997. Originally, it was only geared towards individuals with low-level spacing problems, such as crowding or crookedness. However, as time has progressed and technology has improved, there are now more possibilities, one of which involves the use of attachments. Keep reading to learn more about Invisalign® and the attachments that are used to increase the results of the treatment.

Invisalign® attachments and when they are needed

Below is a quick overview of the attachments used in conjunction with Invisalign, including who may need them and when. This information may be helpful to those undergoing the teeth straightening process.

Invisalign attachments defined

The attachments that are used with Invisalign are small button-shaped pieces that go right onto the surface of the teeth. They are not very noticeable, however, the results that come with it are. These attachments are used to better target specific areas of the dental arch. Targeting them helps to add more force, which results in more aggressive shifting. The more aggressive the shift is, the better the results will be, whether it be for spacing issues or incorrect bites.

At the start of Invisalign treatment, the dentist will bond the small attachments to the surface of the teeth at various locations on the arch. Then, the aligner piece will be able to better grip the teeth via the attachments. Of course, throughout the treatment process, the dentist may alter the location of the attachments or remove them if necessary.

When they are needed

Not everyone who undergoes Invisalign treatment needs the attachments, however, for more moderate to severe cases, they may be necessary or helpful. The dentist will typically determine whether they are needed during the consultation appointment. Again, in some situations, it may be determined later that the attachments are needed. If the teeth are not shifting the way that the dentist had intended, they may opt to add them.

One thing to note is that in the case of moderate to severe bite issues, the dentist will almost always recommend that the attachments are utilized as this can ensure that the jaw adjusts accordingly.

Other things to know

With Invisalign, it is a good idea to have an understanding of what to expect beforehand. With attachments, it is key that the aligner piece is worn at all times to ensure the necessary results are achieved. Although it can be easy to be relaxed with wearing the aligners, when attachments are involved, it is crucial to be disciplined.
